A shoe that will perform well at Mill Creek and bouldering at Big Bend. Call to order. |
Sweaty
palms? Hot in the shade? Is the scorching heat leading to
poor friction? Time for Mill Creek.
Above town, cut into the plateaus below the mountains, lies the gorge of upper Mill Creek. Water rushes down from the La Sal Mountains to drain into the Colorado River through this luscious vegetated canyon. Between the beautiful walls of the gorge, the vegetation and sound of the water, Mill Creek is a summertime paradise. The climbing is NOT easy though, it's hardly even moderate. The grades are stiff and lie mostly in the 5.11 to 5.13 range. Expect bold climbs that are born out of noble and proud ethics. Clipping the first bolt can often be a hair-raising experience. No guidebook exists for the area, so climbers are left on their own to guess the name, grade and nature of a route. Many Moab locals harbor knowledge of route info, so if you see people in the gorge, they might have the "low-down". Most importantly, the Mill Creek Gorge is an ultra sensitive area: SO BE NICE! This is especially important here. Tread lightly as the canyon will quickly deteriorate with the increase in climbing interest. Stay on existing trails and try and be respectful. These rules apply no matter where you go climbing. The folks at Pagan Mountaineering can help you get started and possibly draw a map for you. Come on by for info, gear and inspiration. |
